Which Conditions Can Be Treated by TMS Therapy?

NeuroStar TMS therapy in Miami aims to improve mental health symptoms for adult patients, as well as adolescent patients over the age of 15, for conditions including major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and Major depressive disorder with anxious depression. This treatment method is designed specifically for those who have struggled with these mental health conditions with little to no improvement from other therapeutic options.

This means NeuroStar can offer hope to patients whose depression may be resistant to medication or psychotherapy or who have tried multiple medications and did not benefit from them. Additionally, many people experience anxiety about the side effects of medication, which can be detrimental to their physical and mental health. We offer a process that has zero side effects and can specifically target areas of the brain that are not functioning optimally.

Major Depressive Disorder

Major depressive disorder (MDD), also known as clinical depression, is one of the most prevalent mental health issues in the world, affecting up to 17% of patients. Professional diagnosis of MDD typically involves experiencing a persistent depressed mood or reduced interest, in addition to at least four of the following symptoms:

  • Lack of energy
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Poor concentration
  • Changes in sleep
  • Changes in appetite
  • Persistently low mood
  • Decreased interest in activities
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Psychomotor retardation or agitation

In brain imaging studies, MDD is linked to abnormalities in brain function and structure. These abnormalities tend to affect the regions of the brain that control and regulate mood, emotion, and behavior.

Fortunately, a NeuroStar TMS Therapy treatment aims to stimulate those areas of the brain that are not at their peak function. Patients in Miami should consider this if they find no other method has worked for treating their condition thus far.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder manifests through intrusive, persistent thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions). These symptoms can severely disrupt daily life and impair the patient’s daily activities. Brain imaging studies have highlighted differences in brain structure and function in OCD patients, especially areas that regulate emotion and behavior. These studies also demonstrate that these impairments and differences cause the symptoms of obsessions and compulsions that are characteristic of OCD. Consider working with us at our practice in Miami to discuss how NeuroStar TMS Therapy could alleviate this condition’s symptoms.

Major Depressive Disorder With Anxious Depression

Patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder with anxious depression experience depression and anxiety at the same time. These patients exhibit typical depression symptoms, as well as anxiety symptoms including tension, restlessness, uncontrollable fear, and difficulty concentrating due to excessive worry. These patients normally experience a poorer prognosis and lower quality of life than patients with either depression or anxiety singularly. A NeuroStar TMS Therapy session in Miami could also work wonders with this type of condition.

Important Safety Information

The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient; they occur during the TMS treatment course and do not occur for most patients after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with the use of TMS therapy (<0.1% per patient).

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy should not be used with patients who have non-removable conductive metal in or near the head. NeuroStar Advanced Therapy has not been studied in patients who have not received prior antidepressant treatment.
